COACH BURTON: "Our smartest, most versatile player on the team is Anthony Bolton.
He can play the one, two three and four positions. He could end up being the
most valuable player on this team."
Anthony Bolton turned out to be the key player in Cal State Fullerton's 2002-03
men's basketball season... When Bolton was at his best, the Titans had success...
His versatility was invaluable as he played both forward positions along with
the off guard spot and even some at point guard, where defenders had difficulty
matching up to his size... When he played less effectively, the team struggled...
In Fullerton's 10 wins he averaged 13.3 points and made 45 percent from the
3-point line... In the 18 losses in which he played, he averaged 9.3 points
and shot only 30 percent from behind the arc... Oddly, Bolton's game seemed
to conflict with that of center Pape Sow... Bolton struggled early while Sow
put up strong numbers... When Sow was suspended, Bolton began lighting up the
court... When Sow returned, Bolton struggled with his shot... Only in the last
few games did they perform in synchronization.
CSF IN 2002-03: Appeared in all but one game and started 23 times... One of
three Titans (Holmes and Sow were the others) to average double figures in
scoring at 10.8 points per game... At 4.1 rebounds per game he was No. 4 on
the squad... Streaky shooter... In the first 7 games of the season, he shot
only 26 per cent (13 of 51) from the floor and 12 percent from 3-point land
(3 of 25) while averaging 5.4 points... In the next 10 games he shot 47 percent
overall and 52 percent (17 of 33) from 3-point land while averaging 13.8 points...
He slumped again upon Sow's return but then scored 49 points in the final two
games, hitting 9 of 17 3-pointers and 18 of 18 at the foul line... He led the
team at the foul line for the season, making 81 percent including 84 percent
in conference games... His 10-for-10 effort against Utah State on Mar. 13 shared
for the single-game best in the Big West.
PALOMAR COLLEGE: Two-time first-team All-Mission Conference selection at Palomar
College in San Marcos, California, while playing small forward and point guard...
Twice most valuable player for the Comets... Earned all-state honors after
his sophomore season when he averaged 19.7 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and
3 steals while shooting 47 percent from 3-point range and 56 percent overall
from the floor... At the foul line he hit 98 of 106 attempts for a .925 percentage,
second best in the state to Eric Thompson of San Diego Mesa (81 of 87 for 93.1
percent)... As a freshman averaged 16 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.
VISTA HIGH SCHOOL: Three-year varsity letterman at Vista High School (class
of 1999) in northern San Diego County... As a senior small forward was player
of the year in the Palomar League... Also selected first-team All-North County
and firstteam All-CIF... Averaged 18 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals...
As a junior was second-team all-league and second-team All-North County....
Played football as a freshman as a wide receiver and defensive back.
PERSONAL: Born on Apr. 13, 1981, in San Diego... Mother is Annette Bolton
of Vista... Has a brother, Christopher, and a sister, Chanell... Communications
