Aggies deep six 49ers

Spencer Nelson and Cardell Butler have huge nights in Aggie's win.

LOGAN, Utah (AP) -- Spencer Nelson's 21 points helped Utah State defeat Long Beach State 95-61 Saturday night.

Nelson led Utah State scorers and was just one rebound shy of a double-double performance.

The Aggies (18-6, 9-4 Big West) shot 33-for-66 against Long Beach State (4-18, 3-10 Big West) which shot 22-for-53.

Utah State's top-scorer, Desmond Penigar, had been averaging nearly 19 points at home. He was held to just seven on Saturday.

Freshman Jabril Hodges led Long Beach State scorers with 17, while Vance Lawhorn chipped in 14 and Kevin Roberts added 13.

The win was a marked improvement for Utah State, who had struggled in the last five games, shooting just 43 percent from the field during that period.

Utah State also added 40 points from its bench, an improvement after getting five points from its bench against UC Irvine on Thursday night. By the half, the Utah State bench had scored 15, which equaled the amount the bench added during the previous two games combined.

Long Beach State's Chris Jenkins got a technical in the second half for knocking a Utah State player out of bounds on a fastbreak lay-up.

Utah State also got back to winning at home after the loss Thursday, which knocked the Aggies out of first place in the Big West Conference.
