JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Ishmael Joyce scored 17 points, including eight straight free throws, to give Jackson State its first win of the season in a 63-57 victory over Utah State on Saturday night.
Jackson State (1-5), which had lost five straight by an average margin of 22.8 points per game, was able to force turnovers and make its free throws to pull off the surprising win.
Joyce was 8-for-8 from the free-throw line.
Utah State (5-1) got 12 points from Cardell Butler, but the Aggies shot only 22.6 percent in the second half. Utah State also had 19 turnovers in a game that had 10 lead changes and three ties.
Jackson State scored 18 points off turnovers and shot 81.8 percent (18-of-22) from the free-throw line.
Jackson State led 31-27 at halftime.
The Tigers were outrebounded 49-25, but shot 41.3 percent from the field - almost 10 percent better than their average.
Tim Henderson and Cliff Walker scored 11 points each for Jackson State. K.C. Cavette added 10.
Mark Brown had 10 points each for Utah State.
