Spectrum sight/sound to improve with scoreboard
DGS Spectrum to feature new scoreboard and sound.
DGS Spectrum to feature new scoreboard and sound.

Posted Aug 1, 2002

Watching a basketball game in the Dee Glenn Smith Spectrum is an event that is hard to be matched with anything else. There are many factors that contribute to the ambiance of the game. It is safe to say that the old "igloo" sound system and three color scoreboards were not contributing factors to that atmosphere...

It is a phenomenon that many have complained about. The phenomenon is called random disappearance of Spectrum sound. Fans viewing a basketball game in the Dee Glenn Smith Spectrum would be able to hear the public address announcer clearly in one seat, but the seat next to it would not be able to hear anything except for mumbles.
The phenomenon will no longer reside in the DGS Spectrum this coming basketball season, as Coca-Cola has teamed up with Utah State University to install a state of the art Bose® sound system and scoreboard in the basketball arena.
The sound system was presented to the athletics department through a unique presentation according to athletics director Rance Pugmire. A simulation of a swimmer swimming around an individual was presented, and the individual would try to pin-point where the “swimmer” was in a 360-degree context. The new sound system is said to be very impressive.
The scoreboard (pictured above) will be approximately the size of the “jumbo-tron” in Salt Lake City’s Delta Center. While the scoreboard is the same size as the Delta Center’s, the DGS Spectrum is half the size. “Bring your sunglasses,” Pugmire quipped at the recent Big Blue Club football kickoff meeting in Layton.
The scoreboard will feature four large video boards and four statistical boards displaying athlete’s scoring and foul information. An advertising mechanism which is capable of displaying out of town scores is attached to the bottom of the scoreboard, according to the photograph above.
The entire apparatus is being constructed by Translux of Logan, Utah.
