Attendance Soars Under the Lights

Posted Jan 23, 2002

Addition of Lights at Romney Stadium in 93 leads to increased attendance at Football games.

Since Utah State installed lights at Romney Stadium just before the 1993 season, home attendance for football has increased by about 40%. With new attendance records set in 1993, 1996 and 2001, the future looks bright both for USU's place among peer institutions and for continuing to field a Division 1-A football team.

Legislation pending before the NCAA would require teams in Division 1-A to average 15,000 for each home game. USU has failed to reach that mark only twice since the lights were installed: 1995 (14,933) and 1998 (14,247).

Under Head FB Coach Mick Dennehy, during whose tenure attendance has averaged 20,847, expect attendance to soar in 2002, as the Ags entertain in-State foes Utah and BYU, as well as MWC member and former conference mate New Mexico. Long-time rival New Mexico State also visits Logan in 2002, along with South Florida and neighbor 1-AA Idaho State.
