Aggies beat UNM in 2002, can they repeat?
|
After beating New Mexico for the first three quarters of last years game, the Aggies tryed to give it away in the 4th. That was until a hail-marry pass sent the game into OT where the Ags came away vicotorious. Can they do it again this year at New Mexico? Last three games vs the Lobos have all gone into OT. | |||

With an offensive line that's reportedly the third largest in college football, the New Mexico Lobos will run the football to set up the rest of their offense. The Lobos average 322 pounds across the front, with their smallest starting lineman listed at a meager 300. "Those guys are so . . . big the field almost tilts when they're on the hash mark," Utah State football coach Mick Dennehy said. Utah State averages just 267 pounds across the defensive line. The Lobos (2-3) rush for 174 yards a game. They rushed for 299 against Texas State and 258 against Texas Tech earlier in the year before being held to a season-low 22 yards on 23 carries against nationally ranked Washington State two weeks ago. DonTrell Moore and D.D. Cox lead the Lobos with 77 and 74 yards a game rushing, respectively. "They have been able to run the ball pretty well, and they're more comfortable running play action (than dropping back)," Dennehy said. The good running game, coupled with two solid wide receivers, equals a solid passing game that averages 213 yards a game. Adrian Boyd and Dwight Counter have 20 and 11 catches, respectively. Fourteen receivers have caught passes for the Lobos. The Lobos have had a little trouble at quarterback. Starter Casey Kelly was pulled last week in their 24-17 victory over rival New Mexico State. He was just 7 of 15 passing for 66 yards and two interceptions. The Lobos trailed 14-7 at the half. "I thought Casey was making a lot of mistakes, mistakes that were giving them (New Mexico State) some momentum and a chance to take the game away from us," New Mexico coach Rocky Long said. Backup Kole McKamey led the Lobos to a quick 10 points to open the half. He was 3-for-3 for 17 yards in the second half. Despite McKamey's success, Kelly will start Saturday against Utah State. "It's not a permanent thing," Long said. "Casey is still our quarterback." Defensively, the Lobos ranked 17th in the nation against the run by allowing just 85.2 yards per game, but they are ranked 112th against the pass, allowing 303 yards per game. The Lobos hold a 10-8 series lead over Utah State, but the Aggies won last year's game, 45-44, in overtime. Utah State's Chris Stallworth hauled in a 32-yard touchdown pass on the final play of regulation to send the game into overtime. The game between the two teams kicks off Saturday at 6:05 p.m. at University Stadium in Albuquerque. After losing its first three games of the year, Utah State beat La.-Monroe, 28-10, last week, while New Mexico snapped a three-game losing streak with the win over NMSU. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aggies on radio Utah State (1-3) at New Mexico (2-3) Saturday, 6:05 p.m. University Stadium Radio: 610 AM (Logan), 860 AM (SLC) TV: None |
